KEY FIXTURES

2026 World Cup (June 15): Spain vs. Cape Verde, Group H, 12:00 ET / 17:00 BST. Tournament favourites Spain are currently unbeaten in their last 31 competitive matches, winning 25 of those. Cape Verde, the 14th African team to participate at the World Cup, will be aiming to be the first CAF side since Ghana in 2006 to reach the knockout stages on their debut. Belgium vs. Egypt, Group G, 15:00 ET / 20:00 BST. Belgium will hope to continue good form with Rudi Garcia’s side currently unbeaten in 13 matches. Meanwhile, Egypt are looking for their first World Cup win, with only Honduras (9) having played more games than Egypt (7) without a victory. Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay, Group H, 16:00 ET / 23:00 BST. Saudi Arabia’s final warm-up match saw them hold Senegal to a 0-0 draw, but they have won just once in their last seven games. Uruguay, who isn’t featuring a domestic-based player for the first time, failed to score in eight of their final 12 qualifiers, and their only goal this calendar year came from a penalty in March. TOP TALKING POINTS

Empty Seats Questioned

Only 1,574 seats were not filled across the opening six World Cup matches, according to Fifa’s official figures. While three matches — Mexico vs South Africa (2-0), USMNT vs Paraguay (4-1), Brazil vs Morocco (1-1) — were reportedly completely sold out, South Korea vs Czech Republic and Qatar vs Switzerland saw 679 and 861 seats below capacity, respectively. Fifa says Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina had just 34 empty seats.

However, multiple reports suggest that visible empty seats did not seem to match Fifa’s attendance figures. The clearest example is South Korea vs Czech Republic in Guadalajara which saw thousands of empty seats scattered throughout Levi’s Stadium. Fifa claimed the empty patches in the stands were a result of ticketed fans watching the match from the concourses rather than their seats due to the heat. Fifa’s attendance figures are based on scanned tickets and people inside the stadium footprint.

“Until today, we have sold over six million tickets,” Fifa president Gianni Infantino said at his pre-tournament press conference last week. “The demand has been unprecedented, not by a little bit, but by a factor of 10 or more.” Analysis of Fifa’s own resale ticket and secondary marketplace shows that matches involving lower-ranked nations are now selling well below face value — read more on this topic here.

World Cup Fatigue Watch

France, who begin their World Cup on June 16 against Senegal, are the team with the most fatigue at the tournament since last year’s Club World Cup, data analysed by the BBC shows. Didier Deschamps' squad have played 1,341 matches combined, totalling 98,895 minutes, with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix playing the most minutes (5,009) for France, followed by Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise (4,942).

The squad with the next highest minutes is Portugal, with 1,299 matches and 96,405 minutes. Roberto Martinez’s expected starting XI has the heaviest workload among projected line-ups, with five players having made more than 50 starts in the last 12 months. Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha played the most games (66), reaching the Club World Cup final and winning the Champions League during that time.

Meanwhile, the third-heaviest workload belongs to England, which has the most players (seven) to make 50 or more starts. Germany (92,642 minutes) and Brazil (92,175 minutes) make up the rest of the top five. Individually, the Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk has played the most minutes of any major nation (5,661 minutes), with no French, English, German, or Brazilian player featuring in the top 10.

World Cup Windfall

FIFA is expected to earn $13bn across the four-year cycle that ends with the 2026 World Cup, with $8.9bn coming from the tournament alone. The governing body expects to earn around $4bn from broadcast rights and roughly $1.8bn from commercial sponsorships. However, the biggest increase from the 2022 edition is expected to come from ticketing and hospitality, which are forecast to triple to more than $3bn. As a non-profit organisation, Fifa says it will invest at least $11.67bn of its revenue from this cycle “to boost global football development.”

Several host committees have published upbeat economic-impact forecasts for the World Cup. New York and New Jersey are predicting that $3.3bn of economic activity will be generated during the month-long period, while California’s Bay Area is projecting a $1.4bn uplift when combined with last year’s NBA All-Star Game and this year’s Super Bowl. Chicago’s former mayor Rahm Emanuel was less convinced by the economic benefit, with the city withdrawing from the bid in 2018 amid concerns over financial risk and uncertainty around Fifa’s requirements. In reality, though, the financial benefits of the tournament are likely to be spread unevenly across the host cities.

In related news, Fifa has pledged to pay clubs $355m (£265m) for releasing players to take part in the World Cup. Clubs are expected to receive at least around $5,000 (£3,730) per day for each player released for the final tournament. Players who make it to the final on July 19 will have been participating for 57 days, costing Fifa at least around $285,000 (£212,900) for each player.

ROUTERS’ VOICE

Friday’s Poll: Did the 2026 World Cup opener live up to your expectations?

🟩 🟩 🟩 🟩 🟩 🟩 👍 Yes (60%)

🟨 🟨 🟨 ⬜️ ⬜️ ⬜️ 🙅‍♂️ Nope (38%)

🟨 ⬜️ ⬜️ ⬜️ ⬜️ ⬜️ ✍️ Other (2%)

Your punditry takes:

  • 👍 J.L: “More red cards than goals is not a great look, but the play was fast, and the heat didn't seem to factor. Happy to see the positive energy from the crowd and the players. Unhappy to see the ref brandish three reds, seriously compromising both sides' group-stage games down to their starters. Overall, it lived up and set a good opening tone for the next month.”

  • 🙅‍♂️ L.S: “Everything surrounding the game was outstanding. However, the game performance was poor by any standards. The South African team seemed intent on hard pressing, which accounted for two red cards.”

  • ✍️ L.J: “If you mean the game itself, all I expected was a comfortable win for Mexico. If you mean the opening ceremony, I expected that to be a lame, cringefest - and it was!”

These so-called 'cooling breaks' were sold to us as a shield for the players' well-being, a noble sword against the heat. But in reality? It's nothing more than a gilded cage built for sponsors.
