KEY FIXTURE

Premier League: Everton vs. West Ham, 20:00 BST / 15:00 ET. West Ham’s new manager Nuno Espirito Santo will take positives going into his first fixture as Everton have won just one of their last five Premier League home games against the Hammers. TOP TALKING POINTS

Champions League Broadcast Overhaul

UEFA is revamping the broadcast process for the men’s Champions League in an attempt to attract more bids from streaming services like Netflix, according to Bloomberg. The change could see up to 100 different broadcasters competing for the right to show games in multiple territories.

Previously, major markets were sold to broadcasters at different times, but Uefa now wants to allow them to bid for multiple markets simultaneously. This could mean that one single broadcaster might own exclusive rights to show a game globally. The aim is to attract big-money deals with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, both of which are expanding their sports offerings.

Separately, Uefa is discussing the potential for broadcasters to sign longer-term deals for their packages. This follows the reported $1.5bn deal signed with Paramount in 2022 for U.S. media rights to cover the Champions League until 2030. Short-term deals, often around three years, were implemented after pressure from the European Commission to maintain competition and viewer choice.

Multi-Ownership Ban Proposed

The French parliament is considering a proposal to ban multi-club ownership of football clubs. The bill, which seeks to prevent a single owner from controlling multiple clubs, has the backing of nearly 90 MPs from across the political spectrum. It is expected to be presented to the National Assembly by late 2025 or early 2026.

The legislation could affect up to 10 Ligue 1 clubs—including Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, Monaco, Nice, Strasbourg, and Toulouse—as well as seven Ligue 2 clubs. However, reports suggest that teams already under multi-club ownership may be exempt to avoid destabilising the current balance of French football. Going forward, non-compliance would result in a fine equivalent to 2% of the club’s global turnover, as well as a ban on participation in tournaments.

The move comes as regulators intensify scrutiny of international ownership. MP Eric Coquerel, who presented the bill, cited recent examples such as Lyon’s near-administrative relegation under Eagle Football Holdings and Red Star’s collapse under 777 Partners as evidence of the risks.

18 Games Unbeaten

Crystal Palace have extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions, equalling a club record set in 1969, after their 2-1 win over Liverpool—read the full match report here. Timed at 96:59, Eddie Nketiah scored both the latest winning goal on record for Palace in the Premier League and the latest goal conceded by Liverpool in the competition (since 2006-07).

Since the start of 2025, Palace has earned 45 points in the Premier League, the fourth-highest total behind only Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City. According to Opta’s analysis, Palace use a “midblock” defensive structure more than any other team in the league. As a result, Oliver Glasner’s side have conceded chances worth just 1.7 expected goals (xG) from open play in five matches (excluding Liverpool), an average of 0.3 xG per game.

Glasner’s team now sit third in the Premier League table, just three points behind the reigning champions after six rounds.

  • 🙅‍♂️ D.J.K: “I have not enjoyed the standard of football at all. Everyone tunes into the league for its fast-paced physicality, but this season, it has gone too far. It has squeezed out all the beautiful football. Every team is tall and strong, but lacks on the ball. I predict an early exit in the Champions League for most English teams.”
